It is nearly that time of year again – Valentine’s Day and in the spirit of celebrating love there is no greater monument to demonstrate it, than that of the Taj Mahal!
Eddy and I were lucky enough to visit this ‘monument to love’ on a recent trip to India. Being one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites you can imagine the amount of people that flock here from all over the world. Most people visit either before sunrise or after sunset to ensure they get the perfect Taj shot.
This last minute trip happened to fall upon a weekend and we didn’t actually arrive at the Taj Mahal until well after midday. You would think there couldn’t be a worse possible situation right? Well to our surprise we still managed to get incredible shots just like these thanks to our incredible guide and photographer extraordinaire Nathu!!
Bring a couple of bottles of water with you because other than inside the mausoleum there really is no shaded area and it gets quite warm especially in the summer. We happened to visit on a particularly scorching day! These lovely, detailed pattern umbrellas are also available to purchase on site and add a bit of flair to your photos too.
Be prepared, you will receive a lot of attention while wandering the grounds. Eddy and I almost felt like celebrities for the day – I think I put it down to the fact that I was wearing a sari and people wanted pictures of it. Everyone was really lovely and polite though so we didn’t mind taking lots of happy snaps with them. It was quite the experience!
The inside of the Taj Mahal itself is extraordinarily peaceful compared with the hustle and bustle outside. Here you have the opportunity to see and feel the exquisite white marble which is just stunning. Sir Edwin Arnold expressed it brilliantly – ” It’s not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passion of an emperor’s love wrought in living stones.”
Once you finish visiting the Taj Mahal itself make sure you do wander around the grounds and explore the other areas, they too are beautiful and don’t get the attention they deserve! I would put aside an entire day just to spend here, don’t rush and soak it all in. Here are a few other snaps of lesser photographed areas around the site.
If you are planning a trip to India and want to visit the Taj Mahal I could not recommend our guide more highly. Nathu offers a variety of tour packages around the Rajasthan area. Check out the amazing reviews for Aveda Tours on Tripadvisor, Nathu has a solid 5 star rating and honestly is the best!!
He made sure to inform us of fair prices to pay for souvenirs and warned us what to expect when entering the Taj Mahal in regards to guides and photographers offering their services. He drove us 4 hours each way, from our hotel in Delhi to Agra and back safely in a place where that is not always the case and expertly answered all of our questions. He really did make sure we had the most magical day! A big thank you Nathu from both Eddy and I.
This visit to India was truly unforgettable and a dream come true. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to visit the Taj Mahal – the greatest monument to eternal love with none other than my love Eddy!
